LECTURES

Week 2 - Balance and Emphasis

Balance
  • The distribution of visual weight in a work of design
  • Visual equilibrium of the elements
  • Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical
Fig 1.0 Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Balance

Symmetrical Balance
  • Has equal "weights" on equal sides of a centrally placed fulcrum
  • Equal arrangement of elements result in billateral balance
  • Arrangement of elements around a central point results in radial balance
  • Arrangement of element that are equivalent but not identical around the fulcrum line results in approximate symmetry
Asymmetrical Balance
  • Has unequal "weight" on each side of the composition
  • One side of the composition may contain a dominant element, which could be balanced by a couple or more lesser focal points on the other side .
  • More dynamic and interesting which evokes feeling of modernism, movement, energy and vitality.
  • Offers more visual variety
The Golden Ratio
  • Known as phi
  • A mathematical concept and a number that goes on indefinitely ( 1.618033988749895……)
  • The representative of perfect beauty
  • Used as a guide to create visual balance
  • Used to bring harmony, balance and structure to one's work
Fig 1.1 Golden Ratio

Rule of Thirds
  • A composition guideline to create more dynamism to a work
  • An image is divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically.

Fig 1.2 Rules of Thirds

Emphasis and Dominance
  • Used to create dominance and focus
  • Various elements, such as colour, shapes, or value can bd use to create emphasis to achieve dominance
Fig 1.3 Emphasis
Week 3 - Repetition and Movement

    Repetition - Pattern and Rhythm
    • Makes work seem active
    • Creates rhythm and pattern
    • Variety is essential to keep rhythms exciting and active and to avoid monotony
    • Pattern increases visual excitement
    Fig 2.0 Repetition

    Fig 2.1 Pattern

    Fig 2.2 Rhythm

    Variety
    • A change or slight different in elements and objects, to avoid boring composition
    • Involves varying angles, exposure, composition, etc.
    Fig 2.3 Variety

    Movement
    • The way a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition
    • Occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image
    • Comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves that are used
    Fig 2.4 Movement

    Hierarchy
    • The choreography of content in a composition to communicate information and convey meaning
    • Direct viewers to the most important information first, and identifies navigation through secondary content
Fig 2.5 15 Golden Principles of Visual Hierarchy

    Alignment
    • The placement of elements in a way that edges line up along commons rows or columns, or their bodies along a common centre
    • Creates a sense of unity and cohesion
    • Can be a powerful mean of leading a person through a design

    EXERCISE 2

    Visual Research

    Emphasis

    Fig 3.0 Leaf

    Fig 3.1 Rose

    Fig 3.2 Daisy

    Repetition

    Fig 4.0 Diamonds

    Fig 4.1 Apples

    Fig 4.2 Flowers

    Idea Exploration

    Emphasis
Sketch 1 emphasizes on the rose as it is different from the other flowers that are similar to one another.

Sketch 2 was inspired from the phrase "A rose among the thorns".

I improved my sketch after getting some feedback from Dr. Jinchi.

    Repetition
I decided to draw stamps for my idea for repetition as I like collecting stamps.

I improved my second sketch for repetition based on Dr. Jinchi's feedback.

I added another row of stamps to fill up the spaces inside the stamp and tried colouring them.

    FEEDBACK

    Week 3
    • Can improve emphasis sketch 1 by making some stamps a bit bigger
    • For emphasis sketch 2, can draw the thorns thicker and make it green to show more emphasis
    • Sketches for repetition is fine
    • Can future improve the sketch by putting the stamps in sketch 2 into a larger stamp to show repetition
    Week 4
    • Sketch 2 for repetition still looks a bit empty, add another row of stamps to fill in the spaces

    REFLECTION

I think I still struggle with coming up with ideas for my sketches. To improve on this, I should shall scroll pinterest more often to gain inspiration. Dr. Jinchi has been really helpful as she gives me suggestions to improve on my sketches. I hope in my future exercises, I would not struggle as much when coming up with ideas for my sketches.
