LECTURES

Week 4 - Harmony and Unity

Harmony
  • Involves the selection of elements that share a common trait
  • Becomes monotony without variety
  • Is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together
Fig 1 .0 Harmony

Unity
  • Refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout the design
  • Occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme
Fig 1.1 Unity

Scale and Proportion
  • Both design element that have to do with size
  • Scale - size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork
  • Proportion - sieze of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object
Scale
  • Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure
  • Can be determined in two ways:
     - Actual measurement
     - Visual estimates based on comparision
  • Used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative sizes of objects
  • Substantial deviation from a normal scale relationship can create dramatic results and visual interest within the design or composition
Fig 1.2 Size and Scale

Proportion
  • The relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compre to one another with respect to size, colour, quantity, degree, setting, etc
  • Said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity
  • Effective use of proportion resutlts in harmony and unity

Week 5 - Symbol, Word and Image

Symbol
  •  A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else
  • Symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even
    a whole story

Fig 2.0 Categories of Symbols

Pictorial Symbols
  • Image-related and simplified pictures
Fig 2.1 Pictorial Symbols

Abstract Symbols
  • Can look like the objects that they represent but have less details

    Fig 2.2 Abstract Symbols

Arbitrary Symbols
  • Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent
  • The symbol is invented with the meaning constructed. Many are based on geometric shapes and colours
  • We have to learn arbitrary symbols
Fig 2.3 Arbitrary Symbols

Word and Image
  • Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users and viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. It is therefore important to use suitable and relevant images when designing
  • Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of the design. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design
  • Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept

Idea Exploration

Harmony
The first thing that I thought of when I hear the word harmony is music. Therefore, I decided to design my artwork for harmony based on music notes.

I improved my sketch as the rough idea sketch was a bit too simple.

I decided colour my design with colours that harmonizes together. I experimented with a few different colour palettes.

Unity
I came up with a very rough idea of jellyfishes swimming together in the ocean.

I redrew my sketch by drawing the jellyfishes with more detail.

After getting feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I changed the direction of flow of the jellyfishes so it looks more like unity.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
  • Try to do more exploration for designs
Week 7
  • Blog very well organized
  • Try changing the colour of the music staff so it creates variation
  • Can change to direction of flow of the jellyfishes to make it look more united

REFLECTION

I did not struggle as much to come up with the idea for this exercise. I had fun drawing as I was able to try out different colour palettes to colour my design for harmony. Although my design for harmony was rather simple, I like it very much because it has meaning to it; the colour harmonizes together and when you see music, you think of harmony. I also really enjoy drawing the design for unity as I get to try different art styles for it. I learnt to add a glow effect to my jellyfishes to make my design stand out more.
