REPORTS

Lecture Report 1
Fig 1.0 Bubbles

Bubbles is one of the main characters from the show, Powerpuff Girls. Her character design is very iconic, simple, and unique. Just by looking at her silhouette, people can easily recognize that the character is Bubbles. The creators made her design unique so that she could stand out as she is one of the heroes of the show. Her design is also simple as her design mainly uses circles, rectangles, and lines.

The use of circles and rectangles to create the character portrays that she is one of the heroes in the show. Some of the characteristics of cute characters are to have a big head and big eyes. Therefore, her character design portrays her as a cute character as she a small body, big eyes, and a big head.

The use of blue and yellow for her design shows that she has a bubbly and happy personality. The colours used for her design also has a nice contrast between each other. Her character design was emphasized on blue as each of the heroes in the show has their own emphasized colour. Though her entire design emphasizes more on the colour blue, her hair was yellow to create a contrast for the character. The use of the colour blue also shows her personality as she is easily sad, and cries more compared to the other characters in the show.

Her design also has harmony because the shapes and colour complement each other. The expression of the character shows her as a cheerful character as she always has a smile on her face.

Lecture Report 2

Fig 1.1 Alice in Wonderland

This scene from Alice in Wonderland uses chiaroscuro lighting. In this scene, Alice found herself lost in the forest. She started to cry as she was singing because she was clueless on what to do and could not find a way out of the forest. As the scene continues, the animals and trees in the forest starts to dim out, leaving only a ray of moonlight shining onto her.

By using the chiaroscuro lighting, it was able to increase the dramatic tension for the scene. The dramatic tension gives viewers thrilling emotive depth on the look and feel of the scene. It can be seen that at that moment, Alice felt very hopeless cause she was unable to find her way out of the forest. The chiaroscuro lighting helped to viewers to understand the feeling of hopelessness that Alice was feeling as she was crying.

Other than that, the chiaroscuro lighting also creates a sensational effect which allow the viewers to emphasize on the narrative of the character. It shows that Alice was really sad and was crying.

The chiaroscuro lighting used in the scene also attracts the viewer’s attention. It established a visual hierarchy in the scene. During the scene, the trees in the forest slowly dim out till there was only a light left shining onto Alice. The lighting helped the viewers to focus on Alice as she was the main point of the scene. Therefore, the chiaroscuro lighting was able to attract the attention of viewers by shining a light onto Alice.

Other than that, the scene also has tasteful composition. In the scene, there were more negative space compared to positive space. Although there was more negative space, it fitted well with the positive space to create an attractive scene that catches the viewer’s attention.

Exercise 1 - Vormator Challenge

For this task, we were required to create our own unique character using the vormator elements. I wanted to create an axolotl as my character as I find them really cute. I used Procreate to sketch out my character design.

After sketching out my design, I proceeded to digitalizing my design using the vormator elements. I used the Drop, the Bar, the Wurst and the Tentacle to create my character.

I used the shape builder tool to create the eyes and the pathfinding tool to create the tail.

After creating the character's outline to my satisfaction, I proceeded to colouring my character. I experimented with the colours for my character. I also used the gradient tool to colour my character. The gradient was used to create constrast.

Fig 2.7 Blue and Purple Character Design
- 16/4/2022 -

After experimenting with different colour palletes, I decided to choose the blue and purple design as my final design. I gave my character a name and a special power. Her name is Pyxie. Since axolotl are able to regenerate lost limbs in real life, I decided that her special power was to regenerate HPs lost after 1 turn.

Exercise 2 - Vector Illustration

For this task, we were to create a game card for our character. Since axolotl lives under water, I decided to go for an underwater kind of design. I also went for a more cutesy theme as my character looks really cute. I skectched out my idea for the game card.

After sketching, I digitalized my design. I used the pen tool to draw out the design of my card.

Since my character design uses blue and purple, I wanted my card design to have similar colours. Therefore, I used a purple colour pallete for my card design.

After colouring my card, I added grains to create texture and make the card look nicer.

After receiving my mid-semester feedback from Ms. Anis, I went back to re-edit my card design. I changed the colour of my text to a darker purple so that it is more readable. It also creates a visual hierarchy.

FEEDBACK

Mid-Semester Review
  • Blog is well-organized.
  • Technical skills for Adobe Illustrator is not bad.
  • Have good composition and layout for design but might need to be careful of colour combination
  • Makse sure to apply visual hierarchy if there are informations that require reading

REFLECTION

When I first heard of this task, I was really excited to do this task because it seems very fun creating a character.  However, when I start doing this task, I find it challenging as I have to visually imagine how to design my character only using the shapes given. I struggled to come up with ideas at first which intervened with my progress for this task. This task challenged my creativity to come up with a character design, name and story. Although it was challenging, I was able to learn a lot more about Adobe Illustrator from this task. I learnt how to use the shape building tool and pathfinding tool which I have never used before in the past. I also experimented with colour for my design which was really fun. This task really helped me to familiarize myself with Adobe Illustrator. Overall, I really enjoyed doing this task.
