Task 3A: Type Design & Communication

1. Research

I did some visual research before doing my sketches.

2. Sketches

I used procreate to sketch my typeface.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I sketched more options and made my strokes thicker.

After deciding to go with sketch number 4 from Fig 2.1, I sketched out all the letters that were to be designed.

3. Deconstruction

I chose  ITC New Baskerville Std as reference as it is similar to my font. I deconstructed the letter "k", "n" and "t".

4. Digitalization

Before I started digitalizing my letters, I drew guidelines.

I started digitalizing my letters with the help of the guidelines. I used the shape tool and pen tool to digitalize the letters.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I went back to improve my digitalization of my letters.

I imported the letters to FontLab to make it into fonts.

After importing all the letters, I adjusted the spacing of the letters and also kerned the letters.

Lastly, I exported my font and created some posters with it.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

General Feedback:

Specific Feedback: Good, but keep sketching more options. Make your strokes thicker.

Week 9

General Feedback:

Specific Feedback: The stroke I did for the "k" in sketch 4 was interesting. Too much of a flare for the letter "k", might want to control that a little bit

Week 10

General Feedback:

Specific Feedback: Number sign does not seem to be from the same font family. Comma and fullstop needs to be bigger. Make the "y" a little thicker.

REFLECTION

Experience
I learnt how to use FontLabs to make my own fonts. It was a really nice and fun experience creating my own font.

Observations
I observed that I am starting to be stressed because it is nearing the end of the semester. I affected my workflow for a bit.

Findings
I found that it is not as easy to design a font. It takes a lot of studying and not merely just creating fonts as you like them to be.
