Visual Analysis
  • Is a method of understanding design thta focuses on the visual elements and principles
  • A description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake
  • Recognise the choices that a designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of sa design communicate ideas, content, or meaning
  • A skill that helps people read and critically interpret images
  • Practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgement skills and helps people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information
How does visual analysis work?

Phase 1: Observation
  • Obeservation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words
  • Is about looking, thinking and finding good language to communicate what you notice
Phase 2: Analysis
  • Analysis requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations
  • Think about how the specific visual elements that you've identified combine together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer
Phase 3: Interpretation
  • In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources
  • What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?

Final Project: Visual Analysis

Visual Analysis

I chose this artwork because I feel like it is a very interesting artwork. I feel like this artwork speaks a lot of meaning. When I look at this artwork, it gives me a very peaceful feeling. Other than that, I also like that the artwork is really colourful.

Observation

The format for this design is in portrait. It seems like the design was created digitally by the artist. Colours such as black, purple, red, yellow and green were used in the design. There is a girl silhouette in the center of the design. There is text in the girl silhouette at the bottom of the design. It seems like the design is trying to convey a message through the text. There are colourful flowers on the girl’s head of the silhouette. Looking closely, there are also white outlines of flowers in the girl silhouette. Furthermore, there are bees flying around the girl silhouette. There are also leaves growing out from the flowers. There is also space around the girl silhouette. The background of the design was beige in colour.

Analysis

The design is asymmetrical balanced. There is also contrast in this design. The used of contrast creates emphasis on the girl silhouette as it in the center of the design. There is also space around the girl silhouette which made her the main point of the design. Gestalt theory is also used in the design as the girl silhouette applies the principle of figure-ground. The flowers on the girl’s head creates repetition. There is also movement as the flower grows down the head and acts like the hair. The leaves also create movement as it grows out from the flowers. There is also unity as there are repetition of flowers. Other than that, the colours used for the design also creates harmony. There is also word and image used in the design. The use of word and image in the design gives more meaning to the design. The text in the design conveys a message to the viewers. The text is also placed at a strategic position which creates visual hierarchy and balance for the design.

Interpretation

“Let Equality Bloom” was created by Brooke Fischer for the Women's March on Washington. This piece was made in 2016. It was a way of expressing gratitude to all the women who fought for women's right to vote. They fought to ensure that women are no longer treated as second-class citizens and that women's rights be recognised as human rights (Fisher, n.d.). This piece was made to celebrate the beauty of those women. The piece was able to convey the message it wanted to to the people. Let Equality Bloom is being utilised by the Amplifier Foundation in schools to educate people on the importance of Women's Rights, Human Rights, Gender Equality, Climate Crisis, Voting Rights, Gun and Violence Prevention, Indigenous Resistance, Criminal Justice Reform, and more as part of their HEAR OUR VOICE programme. On top of that, Brooke Fischer’s paintings are usually inspired by her love of all things design, as well as her admiration for Mother Nature’s finest details. Her work regularly celebrates a singular object in nature, such as a bird or a flower, which is like a “stop and smell the rose” kind of artistic expression.

Idea Exploration

I did a very rough sketch of how I wanted to design my artwork.

After getting feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I did more visual research. I drew a better illustration of my artwork that I wanted to create.

I proceeded to colouring my artwork after.

To make my artwork look nicer, I added shadows to my artwork.

Final Outcome

Rationale: Gender roles have an impact on a country's educational system by either preventing young girls from learning in a secure environment or by denying them access to a high-quality education. According to UNESCO, 15 million girls of primary school age will never set foot inside a classroom, and an average of 130 million girls between the ages of 6 and 17 are not in school (The World Bank, 2022). This artwork is about women’s inequality in education. It is trying to show that the little girl cannot get equal education as boys. She can only dream of graduating university. I decided to draw a little poor girl as usually, girls from poor families do not get education and are forced to stay home to take care of the family. Therefore, the girl in the artwork came from a poor family and she could not get proper education. She could not afford any pen or paper. She only has chalk which she uses it to draw on the walls. She draws her imagination of her graduating university on a wall in her house.

  • The girl on the wall does not look like a drawing. Try to change the texture of the lines.

REFLECTION

I really liked doing this project. At first, I thought that it was going to be hard. However, when I started doing my project, it was not as hard as I thought. Dr. Jinchi also provided us with a sample to help us with our visual analysis which helped a lot. For this project, I also got to try out a different art style. I also learnt to colour better. I really love my final artwork for this project. I also did not struggle as much coming up with ideas for the artwork I wanted to create. Surprisingly, I had a clear vision on what I wanted to do for this project which was really nice as it sped up my working progress as well.
