Project 2: Sense of Place
For this project, I decided to use Kwai Chai Hong as my sense of place. I went
to Kwai Chai Hong with my friend during my birthday where we created wonderful
memories together. It was nice to get to visit places again after the whole
pandemic. I took some pictures when I was exploring the place. There was not a
lot of people there as it was a weekday which was a really nice experience. It
was a relaxing silent night walking down the alley, admiring the wall
paintings and lights.
Visual Research
I did some visual research before starting my sketch.
Idea Exploration
I wanted to recreate one of my pictures taken as my sense of place.
Fig 3.0 Rough Sketch
After getting feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I decided to recreate Fig 1.0
instead for my sense of place. I did the line art of the alley.
Fig 3.1 Line Art
After drawing my line art, I decided to make my line art white with a black
background as the lights would stand out more with a darker background when
I draw in the lights.
Fig 3.2 White line art with black background and lights
Fig 3.3 Coloured alley
Lastly, I added some texture to the artwork so that it looks nicer.

Recreating the alley of Kwai Chai Hong reminds me of the calm and silent night while walking down the
alley with my friend.
FEEDBACK
FEEDBACK
Week 10
- Nice idea
- Maybe recreating the first picture would be nicer as it has more contrast
REFLECTION
It was really fun doing this project. It made me realize that I should observe
my surroundings more often. When you start to slow down and observe the things
around you, you actually notice a lot of things. Other than that, it was a bit challenging for
me to colour the alley as I am not the best at colouring. I tried a few
ways to colour it and in the end, chose to colour it with gradient as it is the
nicest one. I am really satisfied with my final artwork.
