LECTURES

Week 9 - Digital Surrealism

Realism Vs Surrealism

Realism
  • Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real"
Surrealism
  • A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
  • It defies logic
  • Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions
Digital Surrealism
  • Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves.
How to start creating Surrealism artworks?
  • Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
  • Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
  • Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
  • Primitive or child-like designs

I proceeded to sketching out my ideas next.

I liked sketch 2 better so I proceeded with sketch 2. Before creating my poster, I took some photos of myself. I used Adobe Photoshop to create my poster with all the photos

Firstly, I composed my poster by placing everything at its positions.

I added filters to the hanging photos so that it matches the poster's vibes.

Fig 1.10 Added filters

After applying filters to the hanging photos to match the poster, there was still something missing. Therefore, I added cracked to the wall to show that it's not perfect as well.

After finishing my poster design, I animated my poster using Adobe After Effects. I made the hanging photos swing. I also made the wall slowly crack and gave subtle movements to the peeled skin. Other than that, I made the spine bend back straight as animation using the puppet pin tool.

FEEDBACK
  • Add cracks to the wall.
  • Anchor point for the pictures is not right.
  • Try animating the peeled skin and spine to make it nicer.

REFLECTION

This was a really fun project. It was not as hard as it seems. I really enjoyed creating my poster and I love it so much. I feel like the poster speaks a lot and it has a very deep meaning to it that's why I love it so much. Animating the poster was not as hard as well even though I struggled a bit with animating the spine at first. But in the end, I got it as well so it was pretty good. Overall, ending the semester with doing this project was really nice.
