Task 3 - Type Exploration & Application
Before starting our task 3, we had to come up with ideas and pitch them to
Mr. Vinod.

After pitching my proposal to Mr. Vinod, I decided to go with my first idea
which is to create a minimalistic font for the game "Monument Valley II". I
started by sketching out the fonts. I should have used a round brush instead
of using the pencil brush when sketching the fonts in Procreate.

I started to digitalize my work in Adobe Illustrator after finishing my
sketch.

After getting feedback from Mr.Vinod, I improved my font by making the strokes
of the letterform thicker and completed the lowercase letters. I continued by
finishing my uppercase letters and numerals.

Mr.Vinod said that my letters are a bit inconsistent as some has a
larger width compared to the other letter. I made all the gaps in my
letterform consistent and also improved on the word "S" and the number
"2".

I tried implementing some texture to my font as advised by Mr. Vinod.
Texture 1 was a bit too much and very different from how I want the font to
be. So I tried by using a different texture which is Texture 2. Texture 2
was very minimal and not very visible.

After consulting Mr. Vinod about my font, I decided to go with my initial
plan which is not to add texture and keep my font simple and minimal. Adding
texture to my font just does not seem right as the game has a very clean
look to it. A more simplistic font is a better approach and suits the game
more. Therefore, I proceeded by importing all my fonts from Adobe
Illustrator to FontLab.

After importing all my fonts, I started kerning my fonts. I google basic
kerning text to help with my kerning process.

After kerning all my letters, I exported it. I tried my font on
Adobe Illustrator and felt like the weight for my letters is a bit
too thin. So, I went back into FontLabs and increase the weight of
my letters to make it thicker.

After that, my font was finally done and I started my application
process.

FEEDBACK
Week 9
Specific Feedback: Be careful when you create pixeled fonts because
there are a lot out there. So, you need to add some sense of uniqueness to
the font if you were to create it. Other than that, the ideas are
okay.
Week 10
Specific Feedback: Can makes the strokes of the letterforms thicker. As
it looks very simplistic, what you can do is pay real attention to how the
outer shape of the thickness is formed. You can create a brush that has bumps
or ridges and use the brush for your letterforms.
Week 11
Specific Feedback: Make sure the gaps are consistent. The “S” looks a
little less wide, make it wider. Make sure the texture added is minimal but
visible.
Week 12
Specific Feedback: Can’t see enough texture in the typeface. If you’re
adding texture, you should add a little bit more. But if you feel like it’s
too much, then go ahead with the clean and simplistic look you initially
intend to go for. Now, whatever you have designed, you have not tested it out.
So, test it out to see if it works for the illustration.
REFLECTION
Experience
It was a rather nice experience to create a set of font. Even though the font might look simple, the process of creating it isn't as simple as it seems. But I am glad I was able to finish it. I had fun doing the applications for this task.
Observation
I observed that I need to be more careful and aware when I import my letters from Adobe Illustrator to FontLab. This is because the letter pasted on FontLaab might not be exactly the same as the letter on Adobe Illustrator. Minor adjustments have to be made on FontLab on the letter itself.
Findings
Kerning was quite hard. It took me a very long time to kern all the letters as there are so many different combinations.
