Critical Review

LECTURES

Week 5

What is a critical review?
  • A critical review is much more than a simple summary; it is an analysis and evaluation of a book, article, or other medium. Writing a good critical review requires that you understand the material, and that you know how to analyze and evaluate that material using appropriate criteria.
Purpose of a critical review:
  • It evaluates the strengthsand weaknessesof an article's ideas and content.
  • It provides description, analysis and interpretation that allow readers to assess the article's value.
  • To evaluate a work of research in order to increase the reader's understanding of it.
  • It expresses the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text.
How do I study the article?

1. Structure
  • What type of text is it? (E.g. Is it a primary/secondary source? Is it an original research or a comment of an original research?)
  • What are the different sections and how do they fit together?
  • Are any of the sections particularly effective (or ineffective)?
2. Methodology
  • Is the research quantitative or qualitative?
  • Does the methodology have any weaknesses?
  • How does the design of the study address the hypothesis/research problem?
3. Reasons/Evidence
  • What sources does the author use (interviews, peer-reviewed journals, government reports, journal entries, newspaper accounts, etc.)?
  • What types of reasoning are employed (inductive, deductive)?
  • What type of evidence is provided (empirical, statistical, logical, etc.)?
  • Are there any gaps in the evidence (or reasoning)?
4. Conclusions
  • Does the data adequately support the conclusion drawn by the researcher(s)?
  • Are other interpretations plausible?
  • Are the conclusions dependent on a particular theoretical formulation?
  • What does the work contribute to the field?
5. Logic
  • What assumptions does the author make?
  • Does the author account for all of the data, or are portions left out?
  • What alternative perspectives remain unconsidered?
  • Are there any logical flaws in the construction of the argument?

REFLECTION

Writing critical reviews was a nightmare for me. I struggled when I was doing this assignment. I have never written a critical review before. It is dreadful but it allowed me to gain knowledge on how to write a proper critical review. I also hate reading which is why writing critical reviews was a nightmare for me. I struggled a bit in finding the papers for my critical review as most papers about my topic are not up to date. I used a lot of time reading, understanding, and analyzing the paper. Understanding and analyzing the paper was not easy. I had quite a hard time trying to understand the paper. But by repeatedly reading the paper slowly, I could understand the paper better. I realized that I have to be very patient when writing critical reviews. It is not something that can be rushed. Dr. Jinchi was very helping in providing feedback for my critical review as well. It really helped me a lot. Hence, I am glad that I was able to finish my critical review in time despite it being hard.
